Written by Fathom Events on Nov 15, 2024 12:03 PM

Sleigh bells are ringing, the snow is glistening, and the magic of the holidays is in the air. Soon we’ll be gathered with our families, celebrating the season and spending quality time with those we hold dear. For moviegoers, that means taking them to a local theatre and enjoying a timeless classic or a heartwarming new release. The blend of heart, humor, and nostalgia in these films defines the season’s spirit, making it a cherished time for many families, far and near.

80% of Americans see at least one film during this time and 65% of those ticket-buyers bring their families to the cinemas [1]. Unwrapping the magic of the movies has become a tradition for many, and with the holidays rapidly approaching, we wanted to highlight six theatrical experiences we are bringing to the big screen this year.

for KING + COUNTRY’s A Drummer Boy Christmas LIVE

There is nothing like joyful Christmas music to lift our spirits for the holidays. This cinematic concert experience features Grammy® Award-winning brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone (the team that brought you Unsung Hero), bringing a fresh take on faith that will leave listeners inspired. Their passion for putting their heart and soul into each song permeates into the film and truly lives up to the name “for KING + COUNTRY,” which comes from an old British proverb signifying fighting for a cause or a higher power [2].

for KING + COUNTRY’s A Drummer Boy Christmas LIVE blends their passion, musical mastery, and breathtaking sets with the sounds of the season, sharing the real story of Christmas that will leave you speechless. See it in theatres nationwide December 5 — 9.

The Magic Flute

Every holiday season, the groundbreaking 2006 abridged version of Mozart’s enchanting musical fairy tale, The Magic Flute, dazzles cinemas nationwide. This ambitious production by Julie Taymor boasts some of the most impressive costumes and set designs in all of The Metropolitan Opera’s digital archive. Presented and sung in English, viewers are treated to whimsical poetry while being whisked away into this magical world.

The Magic Flute will be captivating screens nationwide on December 7, featuring a winning ensemble — including tenor Matthew Polenzani, baritone Nathan Gunn, and bass René Pape.

André Rieu’s Christmas Concert

Dazzling chandeliers, magical Venetian candelabras, and enchanting melodies from legendary violinist and conductor André Rieu and his beloved Johann Strauss Orchestra make up this Christmas concert. Featuring all our favorite holiday classics, the film dances between music, love, and the sparkle of the holidays, bringing warmth to your heart even when the weather is cold outside.

André Rieu’s dream is to make the world of classical music accessible to everyone, and his Christmas Concert does just that. Step into this vibrant world December 11 & 14, with special guest artist Emma Kok joining the orchestra on stage.

I Am the Immaculate Conception

The Advent season, symbolizing a time to remember the first coming of Christ and looking forward to his second coming, is an essential four-week period for the Christian Church [3]. I Am the Immaculate Conception, the newest film from director Michal Kondrat, examines this and the role of Mary, the mother of God, and her divine plan to save the world. Through analyzing ancient literature by eminent experts and using virtual LED Studio and traditional scenography, the film brings to life the crucial moments of Mary and Jesus, inviting us to examine them.

Cinema like this allows viewers to ponder the roots of significant holidays during this time, reminding us of the sacred season of Advent and Christmas. I Am the Immaculate Conception will be in theatres December 12, 14 & 17, making for an unforgettable early present for that history buff in your life.

White Christmas (1954)

Arguably one of the greatest holiday films ever made, White Christmas tells the story of two talented song and dance men – played by Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye – who team up after World War II to become one of the hottest acts in show business. They join two sisters (Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen) to create something magical. Directed by Michael Curtiz, with music composed by the legendary Irving Berlin, the film weaves the sparkle of Christmas with the complicated romance that forms between the characters. This tugs at our heartstrings, even when humor and iconic songs such as the title song, “White Christmas,” are injected into the story.

From the unforgettable costumes to the visionary music and elegant energy, White Christmas remains the technicolor timeless masterpiece you must see on the big screen. This year’s screening marks its 70th anniversary, and even after all those years, it still is the perfect holiday film. See it in theatres nationwide December 15 — 17 as part of our Big Screen Classics series.

The Royal Ballet: The Nutcracker

The Royal Ballet: The Nutcracker has enchanted the stage and screen for countless decades, bringing festive cheer and a magical story to audiences worldwide. Composed by Pyotr Tchaikovsky and first performed in December 1892, the ballet has been adapted numerous times. This production by Peter Wright is a sparkling holiday treat combining the timeless classic with spectacular dancing as the main character, Clara, ventures into a magical world on Christmas Eve night.

The Royal Ballet: The Nutcracker — a story of courage, magic and the joy of Christmas — is a holiday staple, something the entire family can enjoy together. And… even if you are new to ballet, you will find yourself swept up in the movement and wonder of each scene. Whether it’s the fantastic winter wonderland or Tchaikovsky’s glorious score, this ballet will become a classic for you for many years to come.
